At least Hansel and Gretel had a trail of breadcrumbs to follow when they entered the dark, dark forest. All I have are small hands and small feet and small footsteps that fade to dirt behind me. I had hoped my song would save me. I had hoped singing about the sun would lead me to the sun and like a lark, I’d take off and be free. I did not realize that singing in the dark only made it easier for the wolves to find me.

There once was a boy who was so very tall taller than everything and everyone that he couldn’t help but look down on everything. he looked down like a king on his world or like an overlooker, miserable: his face always noble, always tragic photogenic, iconic the way those long eyelashes were always drawn down to hide his faded blue eyes. he missed out on a lot, always looking at things like concrete and dirt and slow-striding feet.
